Depression, anxiety and other disorders can be debilitating struggles. Beyond the actual symptoms, the feelings of those such as depression can be more difficult to describe. One image that depicts depression for some individuals is similar to being in a deep, dark cave…. alone. We have wandered into this cave on our own or been forcefully led and dropped off alone here, either way it can be a mesmerizing and scary ordeal and nearly impossible to get out of alone.
Individuals confronted with this struggle in life have to make a bold decision to allow someone into their cave, to allow someone to come in and experience their darkness and fear. We have found at Connection Counseling that therapy is entering the cave, sitting with the patient in this fear and then standing and walking with the individual step by step as the client is ready to do so.
There is something healing in allowing another person see and experience our vulnerabilities and fears. Doing so is as much as an art as it is a science. We have sat with many individuals in these experiences and helped them make sense of their situation and have helped them find the courage and motivation to improve their situations. In reality, depression causes our perception of the world to be distorted. However, there is help. By reaching out for treatment, you can let the light back into your life.
